The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has condemned the “brutal abuse” of Palestinian abductees in Israel’s Ofer prison, calling the acts a “new war crime.”

In a statement on Saturday, Hamas said the scenes published by the “criminal Zionist occupation” of abuse against abductees at Ofer prison, under the supervision of Israel’s so-called national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, “constitute a new war crime and a blatant challenge to international humanitarian laws concerning prisoners.”

On Friday, Ben-Gvir stormed into Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, in a visit marked by intimidation and abuse of Palestinian detainees.

During his tour, he said the changes imposed on prisons were “not enough” and pledged to push for legislation allowing the execution of Palestinian abductees.

“This is not a luxury hotel. It is a real prison,” Ben-Gvir said, expressing satisfaction with what he described as a “fundamental change” in detention conditions.

Hamas said that “international silence towards the crimes against our heroic prisoners, along with the passing of a death penalty law against them, encourages the fascist occupation to continue its brutal practices inside prisons,” describing such actions as “an extension of the genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.”

The group added that the physical and psychological torture inflicted on prisoners “places the international community, with all its institutions and governments, before its humanitarian, ethical, and legal responsibilities to curb the occupation and stop its crimes inside prisons.”

It called for “urgent action at all levels to protect our prisoners, pursue the occupation, and hold it accountable for its crimes,” stressing that Palestinians “will remain loyal to them until they reclaim their freedom.”

Conditions for Palestinian abductees have sharply deteriorated under Ben-Gvir’s tenure amid severe restrictions and widespread abuse, with rights groups reporting systematic torture, sexual violence, starvation and medical neglect inside the prisons.

According to the latest figures, more than 9,300 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli jails, including about 350 children.
