A shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia has killed eight people, including the suspected shooter, while authorities later found two more bodies at a residence linked to the incident.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement on Tuesday that the attack involved an “active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School” and that “an individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.”

Two people were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while about 25 others were being treated at the local medical center for non-life-threatening wounds, the RCMP added.

“All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated. Police are working closely with the school district to support a coordinated reunification process for families,” the RCMP concluded.

Tumbler Ridge, located in the foothills of the British Columbia Rocky Mountains more than 1,100 kilometers (685 miles) north of Vancouver, has a population of fewer than 3,000 people.

Canadian media reported that the shooter was female, though the RCMP did not provide details on the suspect’s identity at a Tuesday news conference.

Officers are also searching other homes and properties in the community to determine if there are additional sites connected to the incident.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his devastation on social media platform X. “I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” he wrote.

Carney’s office said he is suspending a planned trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Munich, Germany. He had been scheduled to announce a long-awaited defense industrial strategy in Halifax before attending the Munich Security Conference (MSC).

British Columbia Premier David Eby called the shooting an “unimaginable tragedy” and said the government would “ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days.”

Canada has stricter gun ownership laws than its southern neighbor, the US, but a series of mass shootings in recent years has reignited calls for tougher measures.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced gun control steps in 2022, including a “freeze” on buying and selling handguns nationwide.
