Spain railway strike: Unions rally at Madrid’s Atocha calling for increased safety after deadly train crashes

Hundreds of protesters gathered at Madrid-Puerta de Atocha Almudena Grandes station on Monday as railway unions launched a three-day strike affecting commuter and long-distance services across Spain.

Footage shows demonstrators carrying union flags at the station as well as commuters dealing with disruption caused by the strike.

Called by Semaf, CCOO, and UGT, the unions called for a full review of protocols and infrastructure integrity against the backdrop of recent accidents in Adamuz and Gelida.

Madrid train lines experienced delays, although services were maintained at 75% during peak hours and 50% during off-peak periods, according to media reports. Long-distance and high-speed trains have seen cancellations nationwide.

It comes after two fatal train crashes in Spain in January, one in Adamuz killing 46 people and one near Barcelona in which the driver lost his life, and dozens of others were injured.
