The Iranian capital suffered more than $20 million in losses during recent riots and terrorist acts that accompanied peaceful economic protests, according to Mayor Alireza Zakani.
Zakani said on Wednesday that initial estimates put the damage to the city’s infrastructure, including its transport network, at nearly 30 trillion rials.
He said rioters set fire to 89 buses, 57 of which sustained major damage, leaving some out of service.
Two municipality buildings and eight newly purchased firefighting vehicles were also destroyed during the unrest that erupted on January 8.
He added that a full list of damaged properties will be submitted to the administrative government for a final decision on compensation and repairs.
The governor of Tehran Province, which includes the capital, also said on Wednesday that around 1,000 public and private cars were damaged in the recent riots.
Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian said some 54 ambulances and 71 firefighting vehicles were destroyed by rioters. Motamedian noted that damage was also recorded in 44 mosques, 26 government buildings, and several homes and shops in Tehran and surrounding cities.
The official IRNA news agency published a report on Wednesday detailing damage to public property in major cities across Iran.
The report showed that urban infrastructure in cities such as Rasht in the north, Mashhad in the east, and Kerman in the south suffered extensive losses.
Iranian authorities say the rioters and terrorists involved in Thursday’s attacks on public property were backed by the Israeli regime and the US government.
They say Washington and Tel Aviv have been exploiting public discontent over Iran’s economic situation since June, when they launched failed military attacks on the country.
