Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani has expressed Iran's support for a ceasefire in Gaza, stressing that a truce deal “is not the end of the road” and that those responsible for the crimes committed by the Israeli regime in the strip must be held accountable.
Speaking at an interview with al-Mayadeen television network on Thursday, Mohajerani emphasized that Tehran fully supports any initiative and action that could lead to an immediate halt to the genocide in Gaza.
“Iran will support plans that include the withdrawal of the occupying forces, the entry of humanitarian aid, the release of Palestinian prisoners and the realization of their basic rights,” she said.
The spokeswoman noted that Tehran’s support for the Palestinian people is “not merely a political stance” but arises from a deep belief in the right of peoples to self-determination and to resistance against oppression and occupation.
The Palestinian people’s resistance is “legitimate and an integral part of their path to reclaim their rights,” Mohajerani stressed.
She urged the international community to shoulder its “legal and humanitarian responsibilities” and to seriously pursue the prosecution of those responsible for the crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.
She maintained that a ceasefire in Gaza “does not represent the end of the road.” Instead, it should be followed by prosecuting in international courts those who ordered and carried out war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.
On Thursday, Palestinian resistance movement Hamas announced that it had reached a deal with the Israeli regime aimed at ending Israel’s two-year-plus genocidal war on Gaza. This deal is based on a proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump.
Despite responding to the proposal, the group has sternly cautioned about the potential for the regime’s reneging on what has been agreed upon, citing Tel Aviv’s betrayal of similar arrangements in 2023 and January of this year.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also warned the international community to remain vigilant against the “deception and breach of commitments” by the Israeli regime, following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
