Shipping companies panic after Yemen’s threats to escalate attacks

Yemen’s new threats to escalate attacks on ships linked to Israel cause fresh panic among ship owners.

A new level of panic has hit shipping companies using sea routes near Yemen after the Arab country warned it would escalate attacks on ships linked to the Israeli regime as part of its solidarity campaign with Palestine.

A Tuesday report by Lloyd's List, a prestigious journal of shipping news, said that ship owners were increasingly avoiding routes in the Red Sea and other regional waterways two days after Yemen announced a new phase of attacks on Israeli-linked ships in the region.

The report cited statements from major Greek shipping firms, including Ariston Navigation, Intercargo, and Safe Bulkers, showing they had decided to stop sending ships to the region.

“No one wants to take the risk to life and property,” Navios chief executive Angeliki Frangou was quoted as saying in the report, adding that its ships “would opt for risk-free routes”.

Frangou said her company had prepared new contracts for customers that allowed for rerouting of its ships, adding that going around the Red Sea was now a must, given the increased insurance premiums that come with the route.

The report came after Yemen’s ruling Houthi Ansarullah movement said late on Sunday that it would target merchant ships belonging to any company that does business with Israeli ports, regardless of nationality and destination, under a new phase of its solidarity campaign with the Palestinians in Gaza and their struggle against the Israeli regime.

Yemen has been targeting Israeli-linked ships since November 2023, a month after Israel launched its onslaught on Gaza.

The Arab country has declared it would only halt its attacks on shipping in the region once Israel completely stops its genocidal war against the Palestinians.
