Iran’s passenger car production rose in the calendar month to late April as carmakers struggled to offset losses caused by discontinued models and electrification programs.

Figures released by Iran’s industry ministry (MIMT) on Wednesday showed that Iranian automotive companies had manufactured 56,191 passenger cars in the month to April 20, up 5.3% from the same month last year.

Passenger car output accounted for 92.9% of the total vehicle production in Iran in the month to late April as pickup truck production reached 3,197 units, down by more than half compared to the same month in 2024 and accounting for 5.3% of the total output, the MIMT figures showed.

The figures, cited in a report by the ISNA news agency, showed that the number of foreign models assembled by Iranian carmakers had amounted to 11,876 units in the first month of the current calendar year.

Iran’s largest carmaker, the IKCO, produced 28,801 passenger cars in the month to late April, up 20.7% from the same month last year, while its closest rival Saipa posted an 18.7% decline in output with a total production of 15,514 units, the data showed.

Iran’s third-largest carmaker Pars Khodro manufactured 4,420 passenger cars in the month to late April, down 9.3% from the same month last year, the MIMT figures showed.

Total production of passenger cars by Iran’s three largest automotive companies had dropped by 2.38% year on year in the calendar year to March 20 to reach 897,627 units.

Experts blame the slowdown in Iranian car production on various issues, including privatization schemes and decisions by large carmakers to discontinue old models and redesign their production lines to suit their electrification schemes.

Iranian automotive companies had produced 1.335 million vehicles in the calendar year to March 2024, making the country the 16th largest car producer in the world.
