Lebanon govt. must ensure Israel implements ceasefire: Hezbollah chief

Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem

Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem says the Lebanese government is responsible for ensuring that Israel complies with a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon.

“The government of Lebanon, following the extension of the ceasefire agreement, is responsible for pursuing the matter and putting pressure on the observing and mediating countries to stop the Israeli attacks and violations of the ceasefire,” he said in a televised speech on Sunday.

Sheikh Qassem said Hezbollah exercised restraint to give the Lebanese government a chance to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement mediated by France and the United States on November 27.

He warned that Israel continues to breach the ceasefire agreement.

Israel was supposed to withdraw all its forces from Lebanon by January 26 under the truce deal it signed with Hezbollah in November. However, it refused to do so, and the deadline was extended to February 18. More than 80 Lebanese have also been killed in Israeli attacks on the country since the ceasefire came into force.

The Hezbollah leader said that resistance was a “path and an option,” and it would take appropriate action at the time of its choosing.

He said the Israeli regime failed to eliminate the resistance, describing that as a victory.

The return of the residents of southern Lebanon to their homes was a “dignified reclamation of the occupied territories,” he noted. “The proud and free nation, alongside the resistance forces and the army, was able to liberate Lebanon.”

Sheikh Qassem emphasized that the liberation of all occupied territories in Lebanon would be pursued by the Lebanese people, the resistance, and the army.

Hezbollah will hold a funeral for its late secretary general, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and head of its Executive Council, Sayyed Hashem Safieddine, on February 23, he said.

Nasrallah was assassinated in a massive Israeli airstrike in Beirut in September 2024. Safieddine too was killed in an Israeli attack in October.
