Israel assassinates senior government official in Gaza City: Hamas

Ehab Al-Ghussein, the Deputy Minister of Labor, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on June 7, 2014.

Hamas says Israel has assassinated a senior government official along with three other people in an airstrike on a building in Gaza City.

The Palestinian resistance movement said in a statement on Sunday that Ehab al-Ghussein, the Deputy Minister of Labor, “ascended to martyrdom today after being targeted by Zionist warplanes west of Gaza City.”

Ghussein "was martyred along with a group of our people, steadfast and patient on the land of Gaza, after 275 days of aggression and the genocide war against our people."

"He spent these days carrying his religious and national responsibilities, serving his people despite the imminent danger, as his family was targeted, his wife and several of his daughters were martyred," said the statement.

Ghussein was 45 and had been the Deputy Minister of Labor in Gaza since 2020.

In May, his sister Muna Jamal and wife Amani Sakeek were killed in an Israeli airstrike, reports said.

"Yet," Hamas said, "he did not stop for a moment from continuing to serve our people in his honorable national position, setting a great example of challenge, steadfastness, and resilience in the face of the occupation's injustice, aggression, and crimes."

Nine months into Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza, the statement said, the Israeli regime is struggling “to break the governmental work system that shares the suffering and risks of war and aggression with our great people.”

Israel launched its bloodiest-ever military offensive in the Gaza Strip after it was caught off guard by Hamas's unprecedented operation against the occupied territories in October 2023.

Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened to “completely destroy” Hamas before the military would end its offensive in Gaza.

He is now under mounting pressure to end the genocidal war both globally and at home with protesters on the streets in large numbers calling for his resignation.

So far, the Israeli military has killed more than 38,100 Palestinians, including thousands of children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
