A French lawmaker has denounced as “unacceptable” the participation of French nationals in Israel’s war on Gaza, stressing that they should be held accountable if they are found to have been involved in war crimes in the besieged territory.

Thomas Portes, a member of the left-wing La France Insoumise party, made the remarks in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday, referring to a report by radio network Europe 1 that more than 4,000 French nationals are engaged with the Israeli military in Gaza.

“While the UN, through several of its special rapporteurs, warns of genocidal risks… the presence of citizens with French nationality dishonors France,” he said, emphasizing that they must be called back.

He also called on the French Minister of Justice to bring people of French nationality, including dual nationals, who are guilty of war crimes, to justice.

Given the war crimes committed by the Israeli military, both in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, it is unacceptable for French citizens to participate, he said.

The Israeli regime launched its devastating war on Gaza on October 7 following a surprise operation by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas against the occupying entity.

Since then, the United States and its European allies have thrown their weight behind the Israeli regime in its ongoing war of aggression on Gaza, providing the regime with thousands of arms consignments.

Several Western leaders, including US President Joe Biden and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, have also paid visits to the occupied territories to show solidarity with the Israeli regime.

Also on Monday, Italy, France and Germany called on the European Union to impose sanctions against Hamas and its supporters in solidarity with Israel.

The Israeli aggression has so far killed almost 19,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

The Tel Aviv regime has imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.
