Construction workers strike over low wages in front of City Hall in NY
Dozens of construction workers staged a demonstration in front of the New York City Hall to protest over the low wages.
Footage shows crowds chanting slogans and waving banners, while some of the protesters were seen addressing the gathering.
"The construction workforce may very well be the most exploited workforce in New York city. Along with the burden of low pay or no pay and zero benefits they are more likely to die on the job than any other profession," said Michael McGuire, the rally member.
The construction industry added 11,000 jobs in September as unemployment rates for the sector remained at historically low levels, as follows from the report released by the Associated General Contractors of America. Thus the unemployment rate among jobseekers with construction experience in September was just 3.8%.
In September construction employment reached the mark of 8,014,000, however, seasonally adjusted, with a gain of 0.1% compared with August. Over the past 12 months the sector added 217,000 jobs, which equals an increase of 2.8%.
