Iran stomps Angola 4-0 in 2023 AFC Asian Cup warm-up match

The Iran men’s national football team, known as Team Melli, has routed the Angola national soccer squad in a friendly fixture as part of preparations for the forthcoming 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup.

Team Melli thumped Palancas Negras (Black Sable antelopes) 4-0 at the end of a match staged at Azadi Stadium in western Tehran on Tuesday evening.

Iran’s 31-year-old professional footballer Mehdi Taremi, who plays as a striker for Primeira Liga club Porto, opened the scoring for the hosts just 8 minutes into the match.

Taremi put his name on the scoreboard once again in the 16th minute and doubled the Iran national football team’s lead.

Sadegh Moharrami scored Team Melli’s third goal in the 21st minute, and Iranian footballers went into the cloakrooms ahead of their Southern African counterparts by three goals. 

Finally, substitute Shahriar Moghanlou found the back of the net and scored Iran’s fourth goal with four minutes remaining.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is pitted against Hong Kong, Palestine and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Group C of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

China, Lebanon, Qatar and Tajikistan form Group A in the upcoming quadrennial international sports event.

Australia is drawn in Group B, and is pitted against India, Syria and Uzbekistan.

Indonesia, Iraq, Japan and Vietnam are drawn in Group D.

Group E consists of Bahrain, Jordan, Malaysia and South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Thailand shaping Group F.

The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will run between January 12 and February 10 next year in Qatar.
