Iran earns great achievement by joining BRICS as full member, says Amir-Abdollahian

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahioan has praised Iran’s membership in the BRICS group of emerging economies, emphasizing that the move can pave the way for the Iranian administration in its pursuit of objectives and development of macro strategies.

In a Thursday post on Instagram, Amir-Abdollahian wrote, “Along with President Raeisi, I traveled to South Africa to participate in the meeting of leaders of BRICS+ Summit.”

“The great achievement of Iran’s accession to the BRICS not only strengthens multilateralism, but can also provide the basis for the pursuit of goals and development of other macro strategies of the government in implementing a dynamic diplomacy,” he added.

The top Iranian diplomat highlighted that the illegal withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Ukraine war and other international developments clearly showed that international alliances of the past, which have been formed solely on the basis of security or economy, can no longer function efficiently.

It is, therefore, a strategic error to tie national interests to the destiny of others and a certain international system, he said.

Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that “cooperation with various international bodies can be a suitable option with maximum benefits for countries. This is why some members of the BRICS group, despite having good relations with the West, continue to play an active role in the bloc.”

“BRICS, as a multifaceted system, has a great desire to play an independent and effective role in the international arena. It can be one of the desirable goals of our country to pursue multilateralism with other important alliances and systems such as Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Eurasian Economic Union, Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),” he pointed out.

Amir-Abdollahian went on to say that BRICS and Iran can tap various areas of mutual cooperation, emphasizing that the country enjoys great capacities as regards its geopolitical and geo-strategic location, rich energy resources, proficient and efficient manpower, significant progress in technological fields and sustainable political stability.

BRICS was formed by and initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, which collectively represent around 40% of the global population and a quarter of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Iran was among dozens of countries that sought membership in BRICS and had submitted a formal application to join the body.
