Russia on Sunday repelled Ukraine’s latest drone attacks and launched a multi-wave overnight retaliatory operation against targets in Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that a Ukrainian drone has been destroyed by an air defense system in the Podolsk district of the Moscow region with no casualties or damage reported.

“At 11:27 a.m. [08:27 GMT] today, an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack using an unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] against facilities in the Moscow region was foiled. The UAV was destroyed by air defense forces on the territory of the Podolsk district,” the ministry said.

Also, Russian air defense destroyed two aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles over the Karachevsky district of the Bryansk region, according to governor Alexander Bogomaz.

“The Russian Armed Forces’ air defense system destroyed two aircraft-type UAVs over the Karachevsky district. There are no destruction and no casualties,” Bogomaz wrote on Telegram on Sunday.

Ukraine has been stepping up drone attacks against Russia as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last week hinted a change in Kiev’s tactics.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Zelensky is compromising the United States by conducting terrorist attacks against civilian buildings, trying to blackmail the White House into sending Kiev more money, weapons and munitions.

Meanwhile, Kiev’s Air Force said on Telegram on Sunday that Russian forces launched a wave of retaliatory air attacks launching dozens of Russian missiles and drones at Ukrainian targets.

“In total, in several waves of attacks, from the evening of Aug 5 to the morning of Aug 6, 2023, the enemy used 70 means of air assault weapons.”

It claimed Ukraine’s air defense systems shot down 30 out of 40 of the cruise missiles and all 27 drones that were launched by Russia overnight.

It was still unclear where the cruise missiles that passed through the Western-supplied defense systems had hit.

The Air Force also said Russia launched three Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, but did not disclose further information on them either.

However, the deputy governor of the Khmelnytskyi region in western Ukraine, Serhiy Tiurin, said that a military airfield in Starokostiantyniv was targeted in the attacks.
