Top US Natl. Security official in Saudi to again push Israel normalization
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has visited Saudi Arabia and held talks with the kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman amid Washington’s persisting push to pressure Riyadh to normalized ties with the Israeli regime.
Sullivan’s latest visit to the Saudi city of Jeddah was unveiled by the White House and reported in Western media in recent days though Washington did not directly point to the normalization deal.
Sullivan, who was joined by White House Middle East coordinator, Brett McGurk, met bin Salman and senior Saudi officials and discussed "initiatives to advance a common vision for a more peaceful, secure, prosperous and stable Middle East region interconnected with the world," the White House said.
The White House statement made no mention of Israel, but a White House official said a possible normalization agreement with Israel was among various topics.
They also discussed efforts to build on the benefits of a truce in the war in Yemen.
US officials have sought for months to reach what would be a historic agreement between the two apparent adversaries – though behind-the-scenes allies -- but the Saudis have remained resistant so far.
The development came amid Washington’s expressed worries about reestablishment of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia as well as Tehran’s growing influence and alliances across West Asia and beyond.
