At least one person has been killed and three others have been wounded after a man went on a "stabbing rampage" near a subway station in the South Korean capital Seoul on Friday, according to the South Korean police.

The attack happened near Exit 4 of the Sillim subway station in southwest Seoul at 2:07 p.m. (0507 GMT), police said, as cited by South Korean state media, adding that the suspect was detained by police at the scene.

In a report, the police announced that the suspect was a 30-year-old man who was not in an abnormal state at the time of the incident, and the investigation into the motive for the crime is ongoing.

A video posted on local television station YTN's YouTube channel showed police apprehending the suspect, who had sat down on steps passively as armed police approached him and placed him under arrest.

"The man shouted he didn't want to live anymore as he was being apprehended by the police," the news media reported.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the suspect stabbed a man in the back multiple times before running off and attacking more people, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported.

South Korea is generally a very safe country in the world, with a homicide rate of just 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021, according to official statistics.

In South Korea, violent crimes such as stabbings are taken very seriously and appropriate legal action is taken against perpetrators.

The country's legal system ensures that those responsible for such heinous acts are brought to justice and face the consequences of their actions.

The severity of the crime, the number of victims, and its impact on society are all factors that are considered in the legal process.

By comparison, the United States has 7.8 homicide deaths per 100,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
