Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Iran and India should make use of the capacities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to boost bilateral economic cooperation.

In a meeting with Deputy National Security Advisor of India Vikram Misri on Tuesday, Amir-Abdollahian commended New Delhi’s support for Iran’s full membership in the SCO, which was approved during the 23rd SCO Council of Heads of State hosted by India on Tuesday.

Amir-Abdollahian also highlighted the significance of a strategic project by India to develop a part of Iran’s Chabahar port, saying Tehran and New Delhi face no limitation to expand relations.

He expressed hope that the two countries would open a new chapter in the development of the Chabahar project and the North-South Corridor.

The Indian official, for his part, welcomed Iran’s accession to the SCO as a full-fledged member which would create new opportunities to expand mutual relations.

Misri added that he has held positive talks with his Iranian and Russian counterparts on the development of the North-South Corridor and ways to solve infrastructural and administrative problems.

India has been developing a part of Chabahar on Iran’s southeastern coast along the Gulf of Oman in order to expand trade with Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asian nations.

Back in March, the second batch of equipment supplied by India reached Chabahar, bringing New Delhi closer to full operation of the two terminals which it is developing in the port.

Addressing the SCO summit on Tuesday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi said the Islamic Republic has always declared its full support for the existing mega-projects such as the North-South Corridor and the Belt-Road Project and has made it a priority.

He added that the Chabahar Ocean port and Chabahar-Sarkhs routes play an important role in connecting the landlocked countries of Central Asia to the Oman Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The president also expressed Iran’s determination to complete the transit route.
