Victims of Britain’s Windrush era still waiting for justice

Commemorative events are taking place across the UK to mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the vessel HMT Empire Windrush, marking the start of increased migration from former colonies to Britain.

Those who arrived between 1948 and 1971 when immigration policy changed became known as the Windrush generation. Thousands from this era and their descendants were hit by the Windrush scandal that saw them declared non-citizens causing them to lose benefits with many deported and left stranded in countries they had scant ties to.

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman has announced a scaling back of pledges made as well as the disbanding of a unit tasked with reforming the department to avoid a repeat of the scandal.
