A new poll has found that nearly two-thirds of Americans are opposed to the re-election of former US President Donald Trump over his possible criminal conviction.

Sixty-two percent of participants in the poll said Trump should not be allowed to serve as president again if he is convicted of a “serious” crime, The Hill reported on Tuesday.

The poll, which was conducted in late May by Yahoo News-YouGov with 1,520 US adults and with a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points, reported that a slightly smaller majority — 52 percent — said they believed that the former president had definitely committed some serious crime in his life.

Trump, in the meantime, is dealing with a slew of legal investigations, including his money payment to a porn star, the mishandling of classified White House papers, and his role in inciting the deadly Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill.

Sixty-six percent of the participants in the poll said that Trump’s incitement of violence to overturn the results of a presidential election in his favor was a serious crime.

Sixty-three percent said they considered Trump's taking highly classified documents from the White House and obstructing efforts to retrieve the papers a serious crime.

Fifty-two percent said that in their opinion Trump's falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to a porn star was a serious crime.

Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts in the Manhattan criminal probe in early April. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Among others, 43 percent of the respondents said they have the same opinion of Trump as before, while 34 percent said they feel more negative about him.

Meanwhile, Trump is presently the leading nominee as a candidate for the Republican Party in the upcoming 2024 US presidential election.

Among the GOP nominees, Trump is more than 30 points ahead of his closest rival, Ron DeSantis, according to a recent polling average from FiveThirtyEight.

DeSantis, who is the current Governor of Florida, worked as a US military officer in the past, serving at Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, the notorious US "black site" in Cuba, where he oversaw the torture and abuse of prisoners.
