Muslim students in South Korea battle Islamophobia

In Daegu, South Korea, Muslim students have been using a house to pray for years. Now they are building a mosque, and in the process, battling local Islamophobia.

Construction of the mosque began in 2020, but has been interrupted by local government intervention, blockades, and police inaction.

Despite the legal finding justifying the mosque construction, harassment from Islamophobic groups continues, including placing pigs heads outside the mosque entrance.

While most neighbors had initially accepted the mosque construction, opposition is becoming more vocal, with the support of such groups.

Mosque supporters recently brought their case to the foreign media, outlining the absence of South Korean government’s support for human rights.

Outside the mosque, a barbecue pork party demonstrates deep-seeded anti-Islamic sentiment, with anti-Muslim groups planning large rallies.
