The situation of children in Afghanistan is alarming, according to a recent report by the United Nations Children’s Fund.

UNICEF says it has recently screened over a million children under five years of age for acute malnutrition.

The UN body notes that nearly 900,000 children are suffering from severe malnourishment, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment.

Experts say the ongoing food insecurity and poverty, among other factors, are pushing Afghan children and women into malnutrition and starvation.

UNICEF also says that more than 15 million children in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance.

The UN agency has appealed for more funding and support to help 19 million people in Afghanistan, including children and women. This call is echoed by the Afghan health ministry, which is also complaining about the harsh effects of the US sanctions and freezing of Afghan assets.

Beside malnutrition, another challenge faced by Afghan children is the lack of access to basic services such as water, sanitation and health care, the UNICEF report adds. Afghan hospitals are also under stress in the face of growing diseases and major cuts in funding.

Afghan children are facing increasing miseries amid economic and food crises in their country. Advocates are appealing to the international community to step up its solidarity with, and generosity toward Afghan children.
