US 'hypocritical' approach

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says the killing of an African-American teacher by the US police highlights the country’s hypocritical approach toward the issue of human rights. Keenan Anderson, the black American teacher, died in Los Angles in early January after he was repeatedly tased by the police during an arrest. Bodycam footage of the encounter has recently been released, sparking nationwide outrage. His killing was reminiscent of how George Floyd was brutally killed by US law enforcement forces in May 2020.

Russia-Ukraine war

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says his country welcomes any serious proposals by western countries to hold talks over the situation in Ukraine.

England nurses strike

Nurses across England have started a two-day walkout over pay that could cause more disruption to the state-run health service. This is the second industrial action by nurses in one month. The main nursing union accuses the government of failing to take serious measures in improving wages. More such strikes are planned for February 6th and 7th by the Royal College of Nursing union. Ambulance drivers and paramedics have also held their second walkout in two months. Public sector workers are angry over the country’s rampant inflation that has outpaced their earnings. They are demanding better working conditions and an increase in their pay, in line with inflation that currently stands at nearly 11%. Food prices and energy bills have also soared in the UK due to stagflation.
