Russia bans 36 UK politicians, MPs over anti-Moscow activities

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

Russia has announced sanctions against dozens of top British politicians, including Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, over London's "continued anti-Russian activities."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Saturday the sanctions were imposed additionally on British cabinet members "due to British government’s continued anti-Russian course in January 2023."

Among those added to Moscow's blacklist are Chief of the General Staff Patrick Sanders, Secretary of State for Levelling Up and "Cabinet members, representatives of security agencies and journalists," Zakharova said.

Earlier this month, Cleverly flaunted the figures of the government’s "achievements" of sanctioning officials and freezing the assets of other countries in 2022. In a tweet, the secretary posted picture tiles that boast about the figures, with each titled “Frozen,” “Sanctioned,” “Committed,” and a statement saying “2022 the year we took on tyrants.”

Each tile talks about how the British government successfully froze over 18 billion euros of Russian assets.

In addition to sanctions, the UK government has been supplying Ukraine with lethal military equipment, including heavy battle tanks, since war with Russia began in February 2022.

Upon taking office in October 2022, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assured Kiev of London's firm support for the European country in the face of the Russian military operation.

The British PM’s pledge of financial support comes amid his government’s failure to address the skyrocketing inflation, which has caused a worsening cost-of-living crisis across the UK.
