The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has called on the Taliban to safeguard the basic rights of Afghans, especially those of women and girls. The mission said Taliban’s edicts and orders in many cases have violated or impinged on the basic rights and freedoms of the population.

In reaction, the Taliban deputy spokesman said the so-called Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has been committed to ensuring the rights of all Afghans. Bilal Karimi also dismissed the UN mission’s stance as unreasonable.

Human rights activists say the Taliban need to be more flexible and supportive when it comes to the human rights of the Afghan people.

Serious violations of the rights of women and girls by the Taliban, including the right to education, have added insult to injury caused by the US sanctions on Afghanistan and their impact on the human rights situation in the country.

The global community has so far refused to recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan. Upholding human rights by the de facto administration is mentioned as one of the conditions for the recognition.
