World Cup 2022 – Last 8: England 1-2 France

Olivier Giroud scored the winner and Harry Kane missed a late penalty as holders France beat England 2-1, to set up a semifinal clash against surprise package Morocco.

Didier Deschamps’ world champions took the lead after 17 minutes through a thunderous shot by Aurelien Tchouameni from 20 yards out.

The Three Lions equalized early in the second half, with Kane stepping up to equal Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals for England from the spot in the 54th minutes.

But Gareth Southgate’s men were stunned 12 minutes from time when Olivier Giroud headed home an Antonie Griezmann excellent cross.

England were awarded a second penalty six minutes from time, but Kane could not repeat the feat, as he uncharacteristically blazed it over the bar.

Les Blues now fancy their chances of retaining the title next Sunday, if they get to beat an undying Morocco side on Wednesday’s semifinal.
