Lionel Messi has starred on his 1000th career game as Argentina edged Australia 2-1 to set up a quarter-final with the Netherlands.
Argentina had barely threatened in the first half but their talisman Messi stroked in a neat finish in the 35th minute to spark wild celebrations from their fans. The Argentinians had further delight around the hour-mark, when Julian Alvarez punished Mat Ryan's mistake to double their advantage.
Australia managed to pull one back 13 minutes from time, when Craig Goodwin fired a shot from distance that took a wicked deflection off Enzo Fernandez and ended up in the back of the net. But that was it, as Argentina held on to edge through.
