Last winter was devastating for many Afghans, especially internally displaced families. Some lost their loved ones while some were forced to sell their children and body organs to make ends meet.

Yet this year, the UN refugee agency warns that the coming winter will even be more deadly and challenging for displaced people. According to the UN body, 79 percent of Afghans do not have adequate access to heating and 79 percent households live in shelters that require repair.

we visit a refugee camp in Kabul where the people are struggling amid the looming cold season. Some 3.4 million Afghans are currently internally displaced with the majority of them living in such temporary shelters. Some of these people say the war forced them to flee their homes and therefore the United States is responsible to address their needs.

Despite worsening humanitarian needs, the funding outlook for life-saving aid programs and assistance remains bleak, according to the UNHCR. Meanwhile, the ruling Taliban and rights bodies are calling on the US to unfreeze the Afghan frozen assets and lift sanctions.

People here are expected to have a tough winter. They are worried that they may run out of fuel if the global community fails to address their needs.
