These are the elegant streets of historic Sevastopol. Ukraine and NATO still claim this city and the rest of Crimea as part of Ukraine. That’s despite a 2014 referendum on joining Russia.
Down by the Harbor, I wanted to know how people here felt about Ukrainian threats of taking this city back.
A Russian fighter jet flies overhead, a common occurrence—perhaps returning from a combat mission in Kherson. Sometimes cruise missiles can be seen from the harbor, fired by the Russian Black Sea fleet based in the city.
Soviet Leader, Nikita Khrushchev gave Crimea to Ukraine in 1954. Many see that as a historic mistake, not reflective of the views of locals.
Russia and Ukraine continue to claim this city as their own. But one thing is clear: the vast majority of people living here want to be part of the Russian Federation.
