Israel overlooks court order, renews detention of Palestinian prisoner

Israeli authorities have extended the detention without charge or trial of a Palestinian prisoner already held for two years, overlooking a court order for his release.

The Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said the regime deliberately issued the extension order against Muslim Gwanmeh on the day he was scheduled to be released.

Gwanmeh , 22, who hails from Jalazon refugee camp, near the West Bank city of Ramallah, was detained on October 16, 2020. The 22-year-old is from the Jalazon refugee camp, near the West Bank city of Ramallah. He was detained on October 16, 2020. Gwanmeh was sentenced to prison for seven months and then placed in administrative detention at the end of his prison term. Israel has extended the detention for multiple times since.

Separately, media reports said Ahmed al-Harimi, a 26-year-old Palestinian from Bethlehem kept his open-ended hunger strike for the 10th consecutive day in protest against Israel’s administrative detention policy. He was abducted by Israeli forces on July 4, and later an Israeli military court ordered his administrative detention for six months. According to his family, Harimi, who is a father of two, suffers from kidney conditions and has undergone several surgeries.

There are reportedly more than 7,000 Palestinians held in Israeli jails. Hundreds of the inmates have been incarcerated under the administrative detention. Some prisoners have been held without a charge for up to 11 years.

Palestinians and human rights groups say the detention policy violates the right to due process since the evidence is withheld from prisoners while they are held for lengthy periods without being charged, tried, or convicted.

The detention takes place on orders from a military commander and on the basis of what the regime labels ‘secret evidence.’

Palestinian prisoners are kept under deplorable conditions lacking proper hygienic standards. They have also been subjected to systematic torture, harassment, and repression.

According to the Palestine Detainees Studies Center, about 60% of the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails suffer from chronic diseases, a number of whom died in detention or after being released due to the severity of their cases.
