US developing counter-hypersonic capabilities: Sr. Pentagon official

The US military is developing counter-hypersonic capabilities as part of its approach to hypersonic technology on the battlefield, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks has claimed without offering meaningful details.

"The reality is that the United States has a series of concepts for how it believes it can fight effectively, and we have a good understanding now of where we would employ hypersonic capability in that," Hicks boasted during a recent event at the Indiana-based Purdue University as quoted in a Saturday report by Sputnik News.

"I don't want to say much more than that, for obvious reasons, but I did mention today we are also really invested in counter-hypersonic because we want to make sure we can defend against others using hypersonic capabilities," she vaguely added.

The senior military official then went on to assert that the American approach to hypersonic capabilities is different from what the US Defense Department believes are Russia's or China's approaches to such capabilities.

Hicks further emphasized that Pentagon would welcome more collaboration with institutions such as the Purdue University on counter-hypersonics, insisting that partnerships with “the scientific community” are critical to developing military technology such as hypersonics.

Her remarks came nearly two months after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) stated in a June report that the US military needed to improve oversight and coordination in order to effectively develop counter-hypersonic weapons.

The watchdog further pointed out that the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) does not have plans to get early independent assessments of the program's cost and risks, which it said would be significant.
