An explosion and fire at a military plant in southwest France has left at least eight people injured, reports say.

The Eurenco factory in the town of Bergerac specializes in making nitrocellulose, a highly flammable chemical compound, as well as propellants and fuels.

Local officials said an investigation will be launched to pinpoint the cause of the explosion.

Eurenco is a major player in defense sector and develops and manufactures explosive materials for military ammunition. It is a Seveso classified site owing to the use of hazardous materials.

France's Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said significant resources were deployed following the blast and a crisis center was activated at the site.
