Ukraine says has hit ammunition depot in Russian-controlled south
Kiev says it has targeted a Russian ammunition depot in what it called a successful long-range missile strike in southern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military's southern command said in a statement on Tuesday that the strike hit an ammunition dump in the town of Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson region.
Ukrainian authorities said the attack killed 52 Russians.
"Based on the results of our rocket and artillery units, the enemy lost 5️2, an Msta-B howitzer, a mortar, and seven armored and other vehicles, as well as an ammunition depot in Nova Kakhovka," said the statement.
Russian media and authorities, however, offered a different account.
According to an official from the Russian-appointed local administration, seven people were killed and around 60 wounded in the Ukrainian attack and civilians and civilian infrastructure were hit.
"There are still many people under the rubble. The injured are being taken to the hospital, but many people are blocked in their apartments and houses," said Vladimir Leontyev, head of the so-called Russian Kakhovka District military-civilian administration.
He was cited by Russia's TASS news agency as saying that warehouses, shops, a pharmacy, gas stations, and a church had been hit.
Russian took full control of the strategically important city of Kherson seven days after it launched a military campaign in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the offensive on February 24 to "de-militarize" and "denazify" the country.
The Russia-appointed officials in the area say they plan to hold a referendum on the region becoming part of Russia but have not yet set a date.
The Kremlin accuses Kiev of shelling its own people in the territory.
A Russian official said that Ukraine had used US-supplied multiple-launch High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, to hit the area on Tuesday.
Kiev now has eight HIMARS systems, a truck-mounted missile launcher with high accuracy, and Washington has promised to send another four. Russia has warned the US against sending advanced rocket systems to Ukraine.
The HIMARS is the most advanced US-provided system and has the longest range of Ukraine's ground weapons, more than 80 kilometers.
