Energy war between EU and Russia intensifies

Meeting in Brussels, EU leaders have agreed to place an embargo on 75% of Russian oil imports, increasing to 90% by the end of the year.

Four weeks ago Moscow cut off gas supplies to EU countries Poland and Bulgaria. Now Russian gas to energy firms in Netherlands, Denmark and Germany are being switched off.

EU leaders say they will not back down and will continue to send arms to Ukraine. It is clear that most citizens do not support the move.

Amid criticism from US war hawks, German and French leaders have been defending their decision to keep lines of communication open with the Kremlin.

Many analysts suggest the West created this crisis by not listening to Russia's security concerns and apparent efforts to reach out to Moscow recently are merely a charade.

EU leaders have now returned to their capitals, but senior officials here in the European Commission have told Press TV that work is already well underway on a 7th round of sanctions, targeting Russia.

Peace activists continue to ask the question "Why does all the emphasis seem to be on escalation rather than diplomacy?".
