Israel kills journalist

Israeli forces kill a reporter working for the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV network, and a 21-year-old Palestinian man in separate attacks in the occupied West Bank. Journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, was fatally shot while covering an Israeli army raid on the city of Jenin. She was a veteran Palestinian reporter for Al Jazeera’s Arab language channel. The broadcaster called her killing a horrifying crime in violation of international norms. Qatar has condemned the incident as state-sponsored Israeli terrorism. The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, says Abu Akleh’s killing lays bare the terrorist and violent nature of the occupying regime. According to the Palestinian health ministry, another reporter, Ali Samodi, was injured during the attack. It says a young man has also been shot dead by Israeli forces in the city of Al-Bireh.

US $40bn aid for Ukraine

The US House approves an additional 40 billion dollars in financial and military aid for Ukraine to help it in the ongoing war with Russia. The aid package, which needs the Senate approval, is more than the US president had initially requested from lawmakers. If approved, this would push the US aid for Ukraine to over 50 billion dollars since the launch of the Russian military operation there. The figure is about six billion dollars more than the total US spending on all its foreign and military aid in 2019. Moscow has repeatedly warned that such aid by the US and its European allies would only worsen the situation. The Kremlin has also warned that the arming of Ukraine may lead to a direct confrontation between Russia and the West.

China warns US warship

China accuses Washington of yet another provocation as a US warship sails through the sensitive Taiwan Strait. A statement by the Chinese military calls the US action deliberate, adding that it harms peace and stability in the strategic waterway. The US Navy claims, however, that its warship only conducted a routine transit in accordance with international law. This is the second such incident in two weeks. China considers the island as its territory, and views US military activities there as a sign of support for Taiwan. Washington has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but it is the island’s key backer and main arms supplier.
