Soaring inflation, lengthy power cuts, protests, and political uncertainty: these are but a few crises Sri Lanka is struggling with. How did the island nation get here?

To stay afloat and get itself out of the economic quagmire, Sri Lanka has few options outside of turning to the International Monetary Fund. The island nation has so far received sixteen IMF loans since it joined the financial institution in 1950.
