Ukraine seeks more Western arms

With Russia’s operation in Ukraine into its second month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is urging NATO to provide Kiev with unrestricted military assistance. Addressing a NATO summit via video, Zelensky asked for "one-percent of the aircraft and tanks" NATO countries possess. The Ukrainian president once again appealed to the West to declare a no-fly zone over his country. The US and its NATO allies have so far turned down his request. They believe a no-fly zone would push the West into direct confrontation with Russia. Ukraine’s president also accused the Russian military of using phosphorus bombs in battle. In a separate address to Sweden’s Parliament, Zelensky called for Ukraine’s membership at the EU. He said Ukrainians are fighting for the security of the entire Europe.

Amir-Abdollahian in Beirut

Iran’s foreign minister is in the Lebanese capital at the head of a high-ranking delegation. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian is scheduled to meet with Lebanon’s senior officials to discuss bilateral ties. In a press conference upon arrival, the Iranian foreign minister said Tehran was willing to expand economic relations with Beirut. On Wednesday, Amir-Abdollahian also visited Syria, where he met with President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad. The two sides discussed regional and international developments, among others.

Saudi war on Yemen

Iran renews its call for an end to the Saudi-led aggression on Yemen, ahead of the 7th anniversary of an offensive that it is describing as a destructive war and a cruel blockade. According to the foreign ministry, Tehran backs any fair and practical initiative to end the blockade, establish truce and launch talks to solve the crisis. In its statement, the ministry noted that any talks should be led by Yemenis and away from foreign interference. It also slammed the blockade on food, fuel and other basic supplies into Yemen. It said the crisis is lingering due to Western arms supply, as well as support for the aggressors at the UN Security Council. Since March 2015, the war has killed hundreds of thousands of Yemenis, either directly or indirectly. The UN says the war and blockade have pushed Yemen into the worst humanitarian crisis of the century.
