Women’s athletic achievements

Iran allowed some 2,000 women into Tehran’s Azadi stadium to cheer their national football team as it beat Iraq 1-0.

The world seemed to think the earlier ban on women entering was to segregate men and women and that hijab meant no sports or public participation on the part of women.

Participation in professional international tournaments in fields such as swimming may be a problem for Iranian women having to wear hijab by mandate.

But there is a whole range of other sports they can participate in with flesh covered, if international sports federations and bodies set aside their paranoid focus on dress.

Banning muhajjaba women from participating would appear to stem from their prejudice or fear against Islamic dress and teaching, rather than a care for women’s rights anyway.
