On Saturday, over 30,000 people staged a rally in the Italian capital against the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The initiative was called by trade unions, leftist groups and pro-peace movements as fighting rages on in a number of Ukrainian cities and talks between Kiev and Moscow have produced very little so far. The protesters chanted slogans for peace and the end of all wars, urging the United Nations to do more to mediate between Russia, Ukraine and all parties related to the ongoing Ukrainian crisis.

Anti-war rallies have been held across Italy over the past days. Most of the demonstrations held in Rome, Palermo, Milan and other Italian cities have been in solidarity with Ukraine. People at the demonstrations have mixed feelings over who should be held accountable for the war in Ukraine. The majority believes there is a shared responsibility upon all the parts involved, from the US and NATO to Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

In Italy, the most recent government update places the number of Ukrainian refugees who have entered the country since the start of the war at about 9,000. According to Ukrainian-Italian associations up to 800,000-900,000 refugees may reach Italy in the coming weeks.
