Mexican open: Nadal cruises into quarter finals

Rafael Nadal has cruised into the quarter finals of the Mexican open with a comfortable win over Stefan Kozlov.

Having won the Australian open last month, the 21-time grand slam champion saw off the American 6-love and 6-3 in just 77 minutes.

The win saw Nadal improving to a career best start to a new season with his 12th straight victory.

The Spaniard started the 2014 season with 11 straight wins before losing to Stan Wawrinka in the Australian Open final.

Next up, he will face Tommy Paul of the USA for a place in the last 4.

Meanwhile Daniil Medvedev crushed Pablo Andujar 6-1 and 6-2 to reach the last 8 in Acapulco.

The Russian is now three wins away from the title and ascending to the world number 1 ranking replacing Novak Djokovic.

Medvedev will next play Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka with a potential semi-final clash against Nadal.

He had suffered a defeat at the hands of the Spaniard in the Australian open final and will look for a revenge if they advance to the semis.
