Good deal within reach in Vienna if West adopts realistic approach: Iran FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the talks underway in Vienna between Tehran and the P4+1 group of countries can yield a “good” agreement if the Western side chooses to pursue a “realistic” approach.

Good deal within reach in Vienna, if western parties adopt realistic approach,” Amir-Abdollahian said in a post on his Twitter account on Tuesday following a phone conversation with his British counterpart, Liz Truss.

The eighth round of talks between Iran and the P4+1 group of countries resumed in the Austrian capital last Tuesday after a 10-day break. The two sides have bridged some gaps, but differences remain.

The talks aim to bring the US back into compliance with the 2015 Iran deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), almost four years after it unilaterally left the deal and unleashed "a maximum pressure" campaign– including the “toughest ever” sanctions – against Iran.

During the talks, Tehran has said it is committed to negotiating a lasting, reliable agreement in the shortest time possible, but insists that it will not be bound by artificial deadlines.

In a Monday phone call with European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, the Iranian foreign minister said that a lack of resolve to achieve a good deal has caused the negotiations to become unnecessarily prolonged.

“We will never back down from our red lines, which are based on logic and realism,” Amir-Abdollahian added.

In his tweet, the Iranian foreign minister said he discussed Tehran-London relations with his British counterpart, and that the two sides “agreed on importance of maintaining good relations.”

Pointing to London’s debt to Tehran, Amir-Abdollahian said, "On right track for UK debt to be repaid.”

The UK’s debt to Iran is estimated to be as much as £400 million ($542 million), arising from the non-delivery of tanks ordered by Iran’s ousted monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

The top Iranian diplomat emphasized that he also reiterated the existing “dire humanitarian” situation in Yemen and Afghanistan.
