Nadal defeats Giron in straight sets to kick off Australian Open

Rafael Nadal has started the first Grand Slam of the year in great form, after beating America’s Marcos Giron in straight sets.

The Spaniard easily won the opening set 6-1, before facing some resistance by the 28-year old in the second.

However, he switched gears to finish the set 6-4, and then took the third 6-2, to wrap up the match after 91 minutes.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion is the only big three competing at the open this year, after defending champion Novak Djokovic got deported from Australia, and Roger Federer is out due to a knee surgery.

Nadal is attempting to become just the 2nd man behind Djokovic to win all four majors at least twice. He will next meet Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in the second round.
