British minorities fearful as Lords debate Nationality and Borders Bill

Protesters rallied once again outside Parliament as the controversial Nationality and Borders Bill heads to the House of Lords to complete its legislative journey.

The bill would radically change the way asylum and citizenship rules work in the UK, giving the Home Secretary hugely increased powers to strip away citizenship and turn away refugees.

These organisations have made it absolutely clear that they think the entire bill is a disgrace and should be scrapped. However, its clause 9 has specifically raised a lot of alarm as it exempts the government from the need to inform citizens that their nationality has been revoked in advance.

The change in law is expected to affect a wide variety of people, including migrants and refugees, but even second or third generation ethnic minorities fear they might become second class citizens.

The government claims the bill will make the asylum system fairer, deter illegal entry and remove those who have no right to be here.

But despite reassurances, minorities just do not seem to trust the government to wield such power fairly.
