General Qassem Soleimani’s 2nd assassination anniversary

General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were two military commanders, national heroes, and key figures in the Axis of Resistance.

Two years have passed since they were assassinated by the United States, with recent revelations indicating an Israeli role in their assassination.

Soleimani was an Iranian general and head of the Quds Force, a branch of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), while Abu Mahdi al Muhandis was an Iraqi commander and the deputy chief of the Hashd al-Shaabi resistance movement, also known as the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).

Both men came to be known as formidable tacticians and military commanders, revered as national heroes in Iran, Iraq, and the region at large.

Soleimani played a key role in shaping Iran’s foreign policy. Both Soleimani and al-Muhandis played a crucial role in crushing al-Qaeda and the Daesh terrorists in Iraq and Syria.

They formed an integral part of the Axis of Resistance and proved instrumental in Iran’s larger support for resistance movements in West Asia, including the Palestinian resistance and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

On the second anniversary of their martyrdom, we examine the role they played in fighting Daesh, Western imperialism, and neocolonialism. We look at how the region has changed in their absence and whether the US succeeded in its attempt to weaken the Axis of Resistance.
