Iran funeral

Iranians bid farewell to the country’s ambassador to Yemen, Hassan Irlou, who passed away from Covid complications on Tuesday. The funeral was held in the capital Tehran, with different groups of people as well as senior state and military officials attending. Irlou was transferred to Iran for treatment over the weekend, but a delay in his evacuation flight out of Sana'a had compounded his illness. Iran’s Foreign Ministry also commemorated the diplomat in a separate ceremony on Tuesday. Irlou is remembered for his endeavors to facilitate the supply of humanitarian aid to Yemen, as the country is reeling under massive airstrikes and a crippling blockade by the Saudi-led military coalition.

Yemen hunger crisis

The world food program renews warnings against a further reduction of food rations for 8 million people in Yemen, due to severe funding shortfalls. The UN body says it will take the measure if it does not receive more money from donors. The WFP officials say the dangerously low amount of food stocks in Yemen will affect food assistance and child malnutrition programs. Many families will also lose half of their daily share from the agency’s minimum ration. The WFP feeds nearly 13 million people in Yemen every month. It had, however, earlier announced that it was facing a desperate time due to lack of funding. That is while the UN says Yemen is experiencing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Since 2015, the country has been mired in a devastating war imposed by Saudi Arabia and its allies.

France COVID crisis

The Omicron variant of the Coronavirus is taking over Europe at a high speed. The World Health Organization is warning European nations to brace for a significant surge in Covid cases as the highly transmissible variant spreads across the continent. The WHO’s European head says the strain has found its way to at least 38 out of 53 countries in the region. Hans Kluge says the variant is already dominant in Denmark, Portugal and the UK, adding that it will take over more European countries within weeks. Kluge has also warned that a high number of new infections will cause widespread disruption to health systems and other critical services. On Tuesday, Britain reported over 90-thousand new cases and 172 more deaths. France has also announced a record surge in its cases.
