Saudi war on Yemen

Saudi Arabia has stepped up attacks on Yemen, with warplanes carrying out dozens of fresh air raids on the impoverished nation. No casualties have been reported so far. Earlier an anonymous Yemeni airport official said UN aid flights have been halted due to multiple airstrikes by Saudi warplanes. Also on Monday, the Saudi-led coalition carried out dozens of airstrikes across several provinces. The Saudi blockade of Yemen has hampered ordinary flights at Sana’a airport but aid cargoes are usually allowed to bring much needed supplies there. The UN says hundreds of thousands of people, mostly civilians, have been killed since Riyadh, along with some of its regional allies, launched a devastating war on Yemen in 2015.

Israeli West Bank killings

The Israeli military shoots dead a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Abdel-Aziz Hekmat Mousa. The Israeli military claims he tried to ram his car into a number of regime soldiers. This comes shortly after the military announced a decision to change its open-fire rules in the occupied West Bank. The new regulations allow Israeli soldiers to shoot at Palestinians who throw stones even if they don’t pose an imminent threat. Israel has long been criticized for using excessive and deadly force against Palestinians.

Global Omicron concerns

Official data show the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is already the dominant strain in the United States. According to the US Centers for disease control and prevention, Omicron accounted for more than 73-percent of new Covid-19 cases last week. Reuters says new infections in the US has risen nearly 20 percent in the past week, showing an increase of over 70-percent since the start of December. This comes as health officials reported nearly 283,000 new cases on Monday alone, the most single-day infections since early September. The number of hospitalized patients has also increased this month, with hospitals in some areas already strained by the Delta variant, which emerged earlier this year. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden in a televised address said Americans should all be concerned about Omicron but not panicked.
