COVID-19 killing 1,500 people in EU each day

Members of the European Parliament debate the dire health and economic consequences resulting from the resurgence of COVID-19 across the 27-country EU.

With an average of 1500 people dying from COVID-19 in the EU each day, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has told the bloc's lawmakers that a strategy is needed to tackle vaccine scepticism. It's no secret that Von der Leyen is in favour of making it mandatory for people to take the jab but not everyone is in agreement.

Legislators insist the EU needs to send billions of vaccines to Africa and also share manufacturing patents. As hospitals in the EU fill up, businesses are emptying out. The economy is really struggling. In Belgium, just like in most EU countries, more restrictions are being imposed. Everything has to shut at 11pm.

Other citizens have been reacting to new requirements for travelling between EU member states. The EU has been criticised for banning travel from countries in southern Africa after the Omicron variant was detected by South Africa.

The fact that 150 million adults in the EU are refusing to take a vaccine shows that a huge number of citizens do not trust their political leaders or the bloc's institutions, some lawmakers suggest. Apparently, this is because the EU has let people down previously on a whole range of other issues.
