Drone downed

Yemen says its armed forces have shot down a US-made spy drone over its Ma’rib province. Army spokesman Yahya Saree says the aircraft was of the scan-eagle type. He says it was the seventh American-made drone downed by Yemeni forces this year. Ma’rib is a key Yemeni province that’s witnessing clashes between the army and the Saudi-backed former regime loyalists for months now. The army and its allied Ansarullah forces are trying to liberate the province from the Saudi-backed elements. In the past several weeks, the army has made significant gains.

US police abuse probe

The US Justice Department launches a civil investigation into police practices in Mount Vernon, a suburb of New York City. The investigation will examine possible systemic abuses of black residents by police officers. That’s according to federal officials. They say the probe will also examine if police supervisors teach such behavior. The officials say the investigation is launched due to several reports of abuse by police officers in Mount Vernon. It’s the fourth such inquiry in the US this year, with other probes taking place in Minneapolis, Louisville, and Phoenix. The whole process began after a Minneapolis police officer choked to death African American George Floyd in May 2020. His death caused an outcry against police brutality in the US.
