Omicron COVID variant

A new and potentially more transmissible coronavirus variant, now named Omicron, has found its way to Europe, triggering alarm among European governments. Britain confirms its first two cases of the new variant that was first detected in South Africa. It says the two infected individuals have been to South Africa. In Germany, health authorities say they have identified the first suspected case of Omicron in the State of Hesse. The Czech Republic is also examining a suspected case of Omicron in a person who has been to Africa. In the Netherland, health officials have announced the detection of 61 Coronavirus cases among people who had travelled to South Africa. It is not known yet whether they are infected with the Omicron variant. EU member states have already agreed to impose restrictions on all travel from Southern Africa.

Australia COVID vaccination protest

Thousands of people have marched across Australia's east coast to protest against mandatory coronavirus vaccinations. Protesters again gathered in front of Victorian parliament in Melbourne, as well as in Hyde Park in Sydney and at beaches in Brisbane. The anti-vaccination rallies have continued for weeks in Australia, becoming occasionally violent. The anti-vaccination movement, however, remains small, with polls showing nationwide opposition in the single digits. While nationwide vaccinations are voluntary, states and territories have mandated vaccinations for many occupations and barred the unvaccinated from activities such as dining out and concerts.

Anti-France sentiment

Anti-France sentiment is running high in West Africa. Protesters in western Niger block a French military convoy crossing the border from Burkina Faso. French soldiers and Nigerien military police fired warning shots to disperse the protesters who tried to pillage and seize trucks in the border city of Tera. Authorities there say at least two protesters were killed and over a dozen injured most likely by gunshots. The convoy has now managed to continue on its way toward the capital Niamey. On Friday, armored vehicles and logistics trucks crossed the border into Niger after being blocked in Burkina Faso for a week. France intervened in Mali in 2013 to fight against militants. But people in West Africa believe French forces have failed to stop mounting violence by militants there.
