World Cup qualifiers: Italy drop into play-offs after N Ireland stalemate

Italy have fallen short of earning an automatic qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, following a scoreless draw in Northern Ireland.

The Irishmen, who had not conceded a goal at home in their previous four qualifiers felt the threat after just nine minutes, but Giovanni Di Lorenzo's strike was pushed away by Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The Irish keeper had more shots coming his way in the first half, denying Federico Chiesa and Lorenzo Insigne.

The pattern of play changed after the break with the hosts proving more dangerous.

George Saville blasted his effort into Donnarumma’s hands from six yards out and Conor Washington’s last minute attempt was cleared off the line, as the two sides settled for the draw meaning that the Azzuri dropped to second in Group C and will have to get through the play-offs to return to the world cup.
