The United States has expressed concerns about what it describes as China’s “military, diplomatic, and economic pressure” on Taiwan.

The comments were made in a phone call made between the two superpowers’ top diplomats, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

Chinese officials had earlier announced that Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had talked about the Chinese Taipei on the phone on Friday.

“The Secretary emphasized longstanding US interest in peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and expressed concern regarding the PRC’s continued military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan,” read Price’s statement.

China considers Taiwan as being a part of its territory, and has warned against any of its independence bids. Tensions escalated recently over Chinese military flights, as well as increased US military support for Taiwan.

Despite that Binken “urged Beijing to engage in meaningful dialogue to resolve cross-Strait issues peacefully and in a manner consistent with the wishes and best interests of the people on Taiwan,” according to the US State Department spokesman.

China has sovereignty over Chinese Taipei and under the One China policy, almost all countries recognize that sovereignty.

This is whie American forces have reportedly been secretly training Taiwanese troops for months as tensions appear to be mounting between Beijing and Washington.

“The [US] secretary also stressed the importance of taking measures to ensure global energy supply and price volatility do not imperil global economic recovery,” res the state department’s statement.

US President Joe Biden is, meanwhile, preparing for his first bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, set to be held virtually on Monday.

Beijing has repeatedly condemned the expanding US ties with Chinese Taipei and its weapons sales to the island territory as violation of China's sovereignty.
